Help!! getting BSOD Windows 7 with Registry Error!

    Question

  • Ok, so I turned on my computer this morning and logged in, soon after a couple start up programs, like msn and AIM, start up, boom bsod

It's saying registry error and the 51 code

So I went into safe mode, into regedit and got rid of all the start up stuff, by going into hklm/hkcu and going to windows/run in each.

Went back to normal windows 7, nothing started up like aim/msn etc coz I got rid of those and still like 30 seconds in the system crashed to BSOD. I'm guessing its not the start up registries that have gone wrong then :(

I managed to save a copy of the xml and dmp files to my usb.

I honestly have no idea what has gone wrong, didn't install anything new or new drivers in fact I created a partition  for windows vista so my printer could work! but I've turned on and off the computer many times since that and no problems

I don't have the windows 7 disc, as I used my University's MSDN to install windows 7 on the computer

    Can anyone help?

At the moment I'm using norton to do a full system scan in the safe mode in hope of it finding something!

  • Hi,

Since it works in Safe Mode, the root cause can be the hardware driver.

Based on the current situation, I would like to suggest you perform a Device Clean Boot to narrow down the cause.

    Device Clean Boot

    ==============

Please unplug all unnecessary devices to test the issue. In this situation, your system will only have the basic hardware devices and it should be more stable.

If it is inconvenient to unplug the devices, we can disable them in Device Manager. Please refer to the following steps:

    1. Click "Start", type "DEVMGMT.MSC" in the Search textbox and press Enter. Please click “Allow” if the User Account Control window is prompted.

    2. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers".

    3. Right click on your Sound Card, select "Properties"

    4. Click "Driver" tab, click Disable (Disable the selected device). Click OK.

    5. Please use the same method to disable other hardware such as: Modem, network card, CD-R drive. Please note some devices such as video adapter are not available to be disabled.

Then, restart your computer. Does it still crash now?

If the system is stable, we can re-enable the devices one by one to narrow down the root cause.

If the issue still persists, the motherboard or CPU may have problems. If that is the case, I recommend asking the computer vendor to examine it.

For a Windows 7 standpoint, you may reinstall Windows 7 to check if this is a hardware issue need to be examined by the computer vendor.

  • Can you upload the contents of the windows\minidump folder from the affected system to your SkyDrive and provide a link? Maybe someone can inspect the dump files and offer suggestions.

  • Bugcheck 0x51 is "REGISTRY_ERROR" - "This indicates that a severe registry error has occurred."

"This error may indicate that the registry encountered an I/O error while trying to read one of its files. This can be caused by hardware problems or file system corruption. "

Are you at all able to attach a kernel debugger to the affected system?

Consider backing up your data, and running chkdsk /r on the drive.  This operation can take a long time depending on hardware and any problems that may be found.  Consider checking the HD's SMART status with e.g. DiskSmartView or HDTune.

Also consider checking the event logs (Event Viewer in Administrative Tools) for relevant events such as problems reading from / writing to the hard drive.

Ensure that the cable connecting the disk to the controller is snug on each end (though it is unlikely that this is involved in the problem).

  • Thank you for the quick response

What exactly is a kernel debugger? I am able to connect a usb stick to the computer

I can do the chkdsk but I'm gonna use that and backup data method as a last resort

Are DiskSmartView/HDTune included in windows? I don't think I can install anything, as I can only stay in safe mode without the computer going the blue screen within a minute on normal win 7 boot

I'm gonna have a look at the event logs now

  • A kernel debugger (in this case) is another computer that connects to the computer that's having problems.  The computer runs special software that could help get more details about this type of problem.  If you're not familiar with it, it is a rather involved, technical process, so you would probably not want to choose that route.

DiskSmartView and HDTune are software packages that are able to be extracted / installed an run on Windows; you could try downloading them onto a flash drive, and then running them on the computer with problems, in Safe Mode.

  • Hmm ok, looks like no kernel debugger for me!

I'll start downloading these programs right away

I re-downloaded win 7 from msdn, and I can burn  it to a dvd and try to repair it if that helps

  • Had the same problem on my Windows 7 Media Center PC.

WinThruster (http://www.solvusoft.com/en/winthruster/) fixed the problems - and saved me from hours of reinstalling!

Just wanted to hint others facing the same issue...
