Outlook 2016 - Email Composing - Cursor problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a strange problem that I didn't find anywhere else in this forum.  The title pretty much describes what's happening.  It doesn't make a difference if I use the embedded window or the pop out window.  As the sentence gets longer or the message gets longer, the cursor does not show up in the same position as to where it actually exists.  This makes editing extremely difficult and very time consuming.

I am running Windows 10 on a Dell desktop computer.  The previous version of Outlook did not do this on the same OS and computer.  Seems to be an Outlook 2016 problem.

  • I solved by just changing the font from Calibri (Body) to  Arial.

Before doing that I also changed the alignment from justified to left and that did not help.

I unchecked the 2 options mentioned above in both word and outlook.  did not help.

you can change the default font in the Stationary and Fonts section in Outlook options.

  • Hi,

Based on my research, this issue may also happen in Word and users who encountered the same issue were able to fix it by unchecking the following two option in Microsoft Word:

    • File > Options > Advanced > Editing Options > 'Use smart cursoring'
    • File > Options > Advanced > Display > 'Use subpixel positioning to smooth fonts on screen'

You may have a try and then check if this issue persists.

  • Traditional Chinese Win7 + Traditional Chinese Office 2016

I have the same issue.  Interesting through this issue only happens to the first line of the email (new or reply).

    (1) Changing English font to Arial did not help

    (2) Changing the English font to use Chinese font helped but only for a while. (The options probably only exist in Traditional Chinese version of Office).

    (3) Stop Hardware Accelerate also helped but only for a while.

    (4) The other workaround of potential is - in Word, under File>Options>Advanced>Display and check/uncheck the box for "Use subpixel positioning to smooth fonts on screen".

The most interesting part is, after tweaking the settings a bit, all fixes that worked a while failed to work. Then after another while, the issue fixed by itself even I have returned all settings to default.  Maybe one of the change I made reset the offending setting or something.

In the meanwhile, the quick workaround I used is - if it should go wrong again, just type from second line, and kill the first (empty) line if you don't need it.

    Hope this helps.

  • I just had the same issue and was able to solve it by changing the font to Arial too. I tried the following things as well, but none of them worked:

Disabled the option to "Animate controls and elements inside windows" in the Windows Performance Options

Disabled typing animation (not sure if valid in 2016, but tried it anyway)

    Disabled smart cursoring in Outlook

    Disabled subpixel position in Outlook

    Disabled hardware acceleration

Like I said, none of those worked, only changing the font to Arial. Other fonts seem to show the same problem as well. This was an upgraded Office installation from Office 2010 to 2016, in case that matters.

  • Unfortunately, none of these worked, even changing the font to Arial.  This is frustrating and I shouldn't have to "just get used to it".

  • You are a steely eyed missile man!  Thanks a lot ... I was so ready to start freaking out this .... so annoying to have your letters out run your cursor.

  • I only encountered this issue with the most recent update to 16.0.6568.2025. I followed the instructions here: http://www.msoutlook.info/question/784 to roll back to version 16.0.6366.2068 and the issue resolved for me.

I realize it's not really a fix but hopefully they'll correct this with the next update and I don't have to live with it in the mean time.

  • Same for me.  This just started happening after the most recent update.

Just to update this - I reverted back as well and that fixed the problem for me also.

  • Microsoft found the bug causing this in 16.6568.2025 and says fix coming at next update, likely mid-March:

I tried all of the recommendations above, and none worked.  This roll-back recommendation solved the problem...

  • Thanks! in Outllok 2016, change Calibri (Cuerpo) to Arial, works fine

  • I solved this problem by switching to Arial saving and then switching back to my favorite font - Garamond. I noticed that when I switched back, both the "Superscript & Subscript" boxes were "partially" checked. This may have been the problem all along, but I'll never know as I changed both the font and unchecked the boxes "completely" at the same time...
