Start different SharePoint Intranet sites at user log in RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We’re nearing the production stage of implementing SharePoint and wanted to know if this is possible.

Using different sites by department, when a user logs into a system, can their assigned SharePoint page auto start by default and without user’s ability to turn it off?

    Example:

    • Jane from finance turns on her computer and the intranet page that was created for finance automatically pops up.
    • Henry from maintenance turns on his computer and the intranet page that was created for maintenance automatically pops up.

    Thanks

  • Hi.

One way to do this would be to add a custom redirect page to the rootsite as starting page. That will based on the current user redirect to the proper department subsite. This is then controlled by the SharePoint admins and can't really be changed by the users.

This example look s promising, just add code to check the current users and based on the 'depertment' property redirect to the proper department:

  • Hi

setting homepage it is easy, but permit to user to access page from other dept's site!

    another solution.

Create for each dept a dif web app, and also the site collection for each dept ( each dept with his intranet )

On your LAN, configure VLANs based on TCp ports ( the same as used on web app config )

This way, each dept is really separated - your boss will be happy - if you explain that you resolve a security prblem  - Good Job :)

If you need to have a common portal for the company use a diff web app and a diff vlan , for all depts

  • I dunno about "automatically popping up", normally IT will map the sharepoint url as the browsers home page and users will click home and go to their site when they want. I'm sure you can pop up a browser when a user logs in but I cant tell you exactly how.

Once the user is on the homepage for SharePoint, you'll probably want to use Audience Targeting to accomplish the "Finance goes here and Maintenance goes there", but I don't think theres a no-code way to actually perform the redirect for them based on audience. Audience targeting is more to show different web parts or list items to different audiences of people.

  • Pretty easy to do even without SharePoint.  You can use group policy to set users homepage for the browser depending on their department and then stick the browser in the Startup group.
