Retention Policies - Exclude Folder RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello -

We have an archiving solution that works off of Exchange Managed folders and we want to get away from this. Before we can though, I need to create a new retention policy that deleted messages over 180 days. That is easy enough, but I need to exclude the managed folder and any subs it might contain from the 180 day policy. So far I have not found a way to exclude a particular folder. Is there a way to do this?

  • That's what a personal tag is for.  You can create a personal tag with "Never Delete" and have users apply that tag to the folder you want to protect.  There is no easy way to administratively apply that tag, and there is also no way to prevent users from applying that tag to other folders if you give it to them.  Sorry, that's the best Exchange 2013 can do.

  • Or use Retention policy tag (RPT) instead of Default policy tag (DPT). Retention policy tag (RPT) applies to a default folder automatically, not entire mailbox.

For not default folder (the folders that user created), the only method is Ed's suggestion - Personal Tag. More information about Retention tags and retention policies, refer to this document
