Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff RRS feed

  • Question

  • I get the following error when backing up using NTBackup and similar when using SBS2003 backup.

    "Backup Status
    Operation: Backup
    Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Backup.bkf created 3/07/2010 at 10:19 AM"

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
    Timeout before function completed

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
    Aborting Backup."

Have SBS2003 SP2. Have tried clean boot, all suggested updates (None appeared to be required for SP2), and "re-registering related Dll files" to no effect. NTBackup works OK for non-administrative users where I assume volume shadow copy is not used. Both backup programs working perfectly until two weeks ago. Backups have been to additional drive in computer and/or to external USB drive.

  • Hi Daw13,

    1.       Did you follow the KB article below to register the VSS system files?

Various issues may occur on a Windows Server 2003-based computer that is running the Volume Shadow Copy Service

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940032/en-us

    2.       What happens after you’ve done that, still the same error?

    3.       Are there any error events in the event viewer? Please post them here.

Please delete the old shadow copies after you’ve registered those DLL files and try to backup the computer again.

Additionally, please also try to install the update package for VSS in Windows Server 2003 from the KB link below.
