Failed to use SharePoint Designer 2010 to open aspx files on a SharePoint 2010 Site. RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I try to use SharePoint Designer 2010 to open an aspx file on a SharePoint 2010 Site, I get the following error: "There was an error when trying to run SharePoint Designer (Open as HTML).  The command:  failed."

I'm able to open the Site with no error and I'm the owner of this Site.  Please help.  Thanks.

  • Are you able to do everything else on the site, such as modifying master pages, creating workflows, changing permissions, etc?  Make sure everything else works, because if not, you'll need to verify that the SPD settings are set properly at the web app and site collection levels.

  • I cannot edit any master page in SPD 2010 either, but I can create new workflows.  I can also change permission.  How can I verify the SPD settings?  Thanks.

AT the web app level and site collection level?  Did you go look?

    • Central Admin > App Mgmt > Manage Web Apps > Click your web app > General Settings dropdown, choose SPD Settings > Make sure all are enabled.
    • Site Collection > Site Actions > Site Settings > Site Collection Administration > SPD Settings > Make sure all are enabled.

  • They are all enabled by default.

  • Then it should work unless you don't have sufficient permissions.

Are you editing in Advanced Mode?

  • What do you mean by Advanced mode?  I'm just double-click the aspx page in SPD.  Thanks.

  • Right-click and Edit in Advanced Mode.

  • Thanks Clayton.

It doesn't work in Advanced Mode either.  It returned the same error message.

  • Same problem with sharepoint 2013 designer. A uninstall reinstall fixed it for me as well.
