Windows Feature Update from USB - with or without Driver/Update Download. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everybody,

when starting an windows feature update with a usb stick, there is the option to download drivers and updates in the course of the update process.
Is this only the case for me, or is this option not worth it?

A short comparison - Updating 1809 (17763.1098) to 1909 Pro with an usb stick (build with Media Creation Tool):

    With Driver/Updates Download:
    - leads to build 18363.592 (14.01.2020)... not the latest
    - around 1.7GB are downloaded
    - one driver is being updated
    - most of the standard app settings are reset (!)
    - everything takes about 40 minutes

    Without Driver/Updates Download:
    - leads to build 18363.592 (like the usb media)
    - around 0GB are downloaded
    - one driver is being updated (after the update process)
    - NO (!) reset of the standard app settings
    - everything takes about 15 minutes

In my eyes there is no reason to download drivers and updates while the update process.
    Did you have similar experiences?

    Thank you,
    greetings

    Martin

  • Hello

In fact, you don't have to take the download - that's one reason it's marked as optional. But I recommend you to download these drivers and updates, because they can make hardware compatible with new systems better.

Even if you have downloaded feature update, you still might not be getting all of the updated drivers available for your devices. For instance, optional updates might include updated drivers that become available for hardware or devices you've already installed. Windows doesn't automatically download and install optional updates, you will be notified when optional updates are available. But if you do not install them, some important patches will also be required after installing feature update, in other words, important patches cannot escape installation.

    Best regard,

    Sylvia
