About SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure

    Question

  • In SharePoint 2013, when we creared a new site collection, the feature "SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure" is inactive by default.

I know when we activate this feature once time, we can't use "Save site as template" any more. And some of feartures will be activated by this action. (we can use "Get-SPFeature" to get features which status is active.)

If we already use those feature doing something.

Then, we deactivate "SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure" fearture again, and now we can see some of features which actived by "Activate" action are still alive.

Q: Whether can I still use those features normally although the "SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure" fearture is inactive ?

    Is there other effects ?

    Thank you very much.

  • If you plan on using the SharePoint Publishing features than the option should be enabled to clear up any issues that may come later while troubleshooting other issues.

  • Hi Maggie,

What features you are using which status still “Active” after deactivate “SharePoint server Publishing Infrastructure”?

Please check if the feature depend on this feature and belong to publishing feature, if yes, these features might fail to function.

  • For same-scoped features,

If a Feature is deactivated, SharePoint Foundation deactivates a same-scope dependent hidden Feature when the last visible Feature that has an activation dependency on that hidden Feature is deactivated. See: Activation Dependencies and Scope: Activation Dependency Rules; and also: SharePoint 2010 Feature Activation Dependency Usage

Thus, these remaining features are probably depended on by another feature.  I recommend leaving them there. See Mirjam's excellent article for more on Publishing: SharePoint Publishing Features Functionality. To explore feature dependencies in depth, user PowerShell: How can I find the Feature Activation Dependency Powershell
