Export-SPWeb returns "Cannot find an SPWeb Object with Id or Url" Error

    Question

  • I have a site collection up at http://win-oql2facn6h8/, the corresponding IP address of which is 192.168.5.74. That said, I am able to access the site collection from browser via both the URL and the IP address.

Now I'd like to export this site collection. I tried the following command in Power Shell: Export-SPWeb  -Identity http://win-oql2facn6h8/  -Path C:/Backups/mysite.bak, which worked fine. But when I replaced the URL with the IP address and ran the command as Export-SPWeb  -Identity http://192.168.5.74/  -Path C:/Backups/mysite.bak, it complained with the above error.

  • Although you can access the server in most situations using the IP it is not a known URL to SharePoint. If you would like to use the IP, you would have to create an AAM mapping with this IP to ensure that SharePoint knows about the url with IP.

  • Check http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607895.aspx under the Identity parameter and also http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sharepoint.powershell.spwebpipebind.aspx
While it does not say explicitly, it assumes GUID or URI.
