Excel Data Validation is Grayed Out

  • I have a spreadsheet that has the Data Validation option grayed out.  I can open up a totally new spreadsheet and the Data Validation option is not gray but regular blue that I can click and then add a look-up list table.  When I go back to the other spreadsheet, however, the Data Validation tab is still grayed out.  Does anyone know why this is and how I can fix it?  I've looked through the Options choices trying to find a check box or whatever that will enable the Data Validation choice, but nothing I've seen works.

  • Hi,

As far as I know, if one of the following situation is true, the Data Validation option will be grayed out.

    The sheet is protected

    The workbook is shared

    More than one sheet selected

  • Thank You Jaynet. In my case, I had accidentally selected multiple worksheet in the workbook. I clicked on one of the worksheet in the workbook and the selected the worksheet where I wanted to add the data validation. It allowed me to add data validation.
