all shared files open as read only RRS feed

  • Question

  • shares reside on w2003 server standard edtion, clients all in workgroups, XP pro and win 7. About 4 weeks ago created a new folder hidden and only accessed and seen by mangement. Two days later all files in folders on shares became read-only.
Even with new folders created, files cannot be saved to new or old folders. All users have read write execut permissons. All files in folders do no show as read only and alll permissons look correct. Uers can drag a file to desktiop and open  without read only , but cannot save back to server. Server has been up for near 6 years, issue began 4 weeks ago.

  • Hi rmumm,

You will need to check the share and NTFS secuity permission of the folders on the server side. It is possibly that someone has set up Read only permission on that server share.

  • what applications show this behavior?

Almost all Microsoft Office files create a tmp file, and then delete the original file and rename the tmp file to the say ppt file. Check permissions for the folder where the clients are mapping tmp files

  • Please create a folder for test. Let's call the folder "Test".

Open the Security tab of Test folder, click Advanced and then Change Permissions. Uncheck "Include inheritable xxx" to disable inherit. Click Remove button so all permission settings are removed.

    Add Everyone as Full Control.

Check if issue still exists in Test folder --- if not then it is a permission issue as it has different permission settings as others. Check the same place to see if any incorrect permission listed in "Advanced Security Settings for <folder>" page.

Also as there is no domain enviroment, clients accessing the server using local account. Then all accounts are created in server with same username and password? Or you just shared the folder to Everyone?

Specifically, if they are Office files, check this: delete all files with no extension name (show extension name first) and with extension name like "~.xls", "~doc" etc. Then try again.
