XLSX file appears to be open by Administrator RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

We have a problem with an xlsx file on our network. The file shows, in the open files mmc snap in on the server, that its opened by Administrator rather than the username of the person that is actually opening it.

This appears to only happen on one particular spreadsheet. Other spreadsheets show as being opened by the username involved.

This causes another problem which is that, if someone has this file open, the other users attempting to open it just get told it's open by "another user" rather than the actual name of the person. This doesnt happen on other files either.

Any ideas why this might be?

Machines are XP and Win7 server is 2003 64 bit.

  • I am moving this thread to Office forum to get better answer as the issue is specific to an Excel file.

You can look at procmon log to make sure that the OS makes the FileOpen call in the correct users context.
