  • Clarify: OE got freeze while prompt for credential, right?

    Collect info:

    1.       Version: windows client OS, Outlook Express

    2.       Who provides mail service for you, local ISP? Which type of mail account do you use? POP3/IMAP/HTTP

    3.       Is there any error info in your application log?

     <Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer->Expand to “application log”>

    4.       How’s your IE? Does it work properly? Is there any process occupied larger CPU in the Task Manager when symptom happens?

    Troubleshooting (backup all OE data before avoid any loss!):

    1.       Disable all non-microsoft services and firewall for testing

    a.       Disable your firewall temporarily

    b.      Start->run->msconfig

    c.       “Services” tab->check “Hide All Microsoft Services”->click “Disable all”

    d.      Reboot and check your OE

    2.       Create a new identity on the OE

    a.       Start->run->wab->open address book

    b.      "File" -> "Switch Identity " -> "New"->enter the name of the new identity and click "OK"-> Click "Yes" to switch to the new identity

    c.       Close address book and start, please reconfigure the email account

    d.      Check the issue

    e.      If problem solved, we can import the original data to the new identity. Please refer to the following article

    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=270670

    3.       Confirm your configuration that all is correct on the website which provides this mail service

    4.       Confirm that you can access mailbox by web page

    5.       Re-install OE based on KB 318378

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/en-us

    Known Resolution:

    Same symptom caused by corrupted inbox.dbx file, remove and import again

    a.       Rename folder “Outlook Express” to “Outlook Express Old”

    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{YOUR_IDENTITY_STRING}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

    b.      Start up OE; it will create an empty environment, check if you get freeze

    If it’s OK, then you import dbx file back by the following steps

    c.       “File” menu->Import->Messages->choose “Outlook Express”->next

    d.      Choose “Import mail from an OE6 Identity” and select your identity, “Main Identity” (Default)

    e.      Browse to copied data folder and import the data
