Is there any way to recover my Outlook data? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everyone,

    I have a problem with Outlook 2007. I am trying to import a data file that I have placed on my desktop called outlook.pst. I am getting an error message stating " C:\...\outlook.pst is not an Outlook data file (.pst).

    The Outlook.pst is outlook file but its saying is not and outlook file. Is there anything wrong? That sounds weird. ScanPST.exe after launch, says that can't repair the file.

    Please post if you have any suggestion. Thank you.

  • If you use the third party software Outlook Repair Kit, it probably wouldn't hurt to try a subsequent pass just to verify that the file is completely clean from http://www.microsoftoutlook.repair/

    I don't know if this is the case with the third party software mentioned in this thread, but using scanpst is a "progressive" process. Fixing corruption in the PST file is like removing layers of an onion one at a time. It usually takes multiple passes. Run it again and again until you get a message that no errors were found.

    Sometimes on the first pass, instead of getting a message that errors were found, you get a message something like, "some minor inconsistencies were found and repair is optional" (I forget the exact wording). Always do the repair and then run scanpst again. Fixing the initial "minor inconsistencies" often reveals errors on the next pass.

  • Your symptom is normally indicating the PST file is damaged or corrupt.

    There are a lot of online resources discussing about how to recovering corrupt or damaged PST files.

    And since scanpst does not work, there are many third-party Outlook recovery tools you can try, below is a list of them:

    Nearly all these tools provide a free trial so you can try first to see if a tool works before purchase it.

    Good luck!

  • Restore manually

    1. Choose File-> Open-> Outlook Data File…
    2. Browse to the location where you’ve restored the pst file. For instance:
      D:\My Documents\My Outlook\Temp
    3. You’ll now see an additional set of folders added to your folder list which you can expand. Expand the list and select the Inbox folder
    4. In this folder select the messages you want to restore to the original Inbox folder
    5. Drag & drop them to the default Inbox folder
    6. Do the same for the Contacts folder. You might want to set your view to a list view so you can easily select and move the items.
      • Outlook 2007 and previous
        View-> Current View-> Phone List
      • Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013
        tab Home-> group Current View-> List
    7. Now that the importing is complete, right click the pst-file in Outlook added in step 2 and choose Disconnect.
    8. Restart Outlook and remove the export.pst file from the Temp directory if desired.
