Exchange 2013 CU11 to CU21 upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been tasked with getting our Exchange servers updated to a more current version.  We currently have 4 servers in our Exchange environment.  We have 2 database servers within our DAG and we have 2 CAS server, one of which is a witness to the DAG.  I checked the .Net version on all the servers and they all have 4.7.1 (461310) installed on them.  So, my question is, can we go straight to CU21?  Also, since we have the DAG, what is the best process to get them all upgraded?

  • Hi,

All Exchange services will be stopped when you install the update. You don't need to manually stop them. You just need to put the server in maintenance mode. Sorry for making the confusion.

Exchange CU21 or later version supports .NET 4.7.2 only. If you need to upgrade to those versions, please install the .NET 4.7.2. For your reference:

    Microsoft .NET Framework

Yes go straight to CU22 ( not 21)

    Install .net 4.7.2 then CU22

When upgrading Exchange from an unsupported CU to the current CU and no intermediate CUs are available, you should upgrade to the latest version of .NET that's supported by Exchange first and then immediately upgrade to the current CU. This method doesn't replace the need to keep your Exchange servers up to date and on the latest supported, CU.

  • Hi,

To install upgrades on DAG members, you need to stop all Exchange services and the Cluster service, and put the server in maintenance mode first as above link mentioned.

If there is anything unclear or any update, don't hesitate to let us know.

  • Thanks for the response!  So just stop all Exchange services on the current server leaving all others alone?

  • If .Net 4.7.1 is already installed, does 4.7.2 have to be installed?

No, it doesnt. In your case, I would install CU22 first, then install 4.7.2 however since 4.7.1 is already installed.

4.7.1 is not supported however with your current CU11
