Exchange 2007 SP3 Message Recall automatically removing messages without user intervention

  • We are running a mixture of Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003 clients and Exchange 2007 SP3 No roll up updates.

Now I was under the impression that for a message recall to work, the recipient has to open the recalled message before the original message is recalled.

I have just sent a user a message (reading pane disabled) and then sent a recalled message. Both messages are shown as unread in the mailbox. After a few minutes both messages are removed without any interaction from the recipient. The recipient wasn't informed that any messages have been recalled either.

    Is this the standard procedure?

Now I am almost positive this has changed, previously a recalled message would only be recalled if the recalled message was opened.

    Can anyone confirm this?

  • I tend to work on the basis that message recall doesn't work. Safer that way and doesn't involve embarrassment on the recall.

Message recall does not work if the message has been opened. It only works if the message is unread. Therefore you have it the wrong way round.

If the message has been opened, or you try to recall across the Internet, then the recipient will get a message about an attempt to recall.

Thanks for the link, but that doesn't explain the situation I find myself in.

    I selected:

Deleted unread copies of this message
Tell me if recall succeeds or fails for each recipient
    Pressed OK

I verified that the tracking options are set correctly.

Both Exchange accounts are internal, with no external contacts involved.

I RDP into my test box, I sent one email, then recalled the sent message. I saw both emails in the Inbox of the test mailbox, neither message was opened, after a few minutes both disappeared.

I just want to confirm that this is the normal behaviour.

Simon, thanks for your explanation, both messages were unopened and internal users.

I haven't got a problem with the message being deleted, I just remember previously for the recall to work the recipient has to click on the recalled message.

In my situation the recall is working without the recipient clicking on the recalled message.

  • Andrew,

Whether the emails get deleted automatically depends on the tracking options.

If automatic processing is enabled emails will be deleted automatically.

If not the emails will stay in the Inbox until the user opens the recall request.

This article shows you how the tracking options are configured:
