• Dear Murugesa Pandian,

I have raised advisory case with Microsoft and got below reply

"We can confirm that SharePoint On-Premise version 2010 and 2013 are compatible with Active Directory On-Premise version 2016

We can confirm that after AD upgrade successfully to version 2016 there won’t be any issue or impact to SharePoint On-Premise version 2010 and 2013

Please note, the SharePoint On-Premise version 2010 and 2013 means Out-of-Box features/functions in SharePoint On-Premise version 2010 and 2013

• Custom solutions/developments in SharePoint On-Premise version 2010 and 2013 are not included in this statement. We cannot ensure custom solutions/developments work correct after upgraded AD to version 2016.
• Features/Functions used in SharePoint On-Premise version 2010 and 2013 provided by other applications are not included in this statement. Such as send email feature in SharePoint On-Premise version 2010 and 2013 is based on mail system. SharePoint only call the APIs from the mail system to proceed the send email actions. However we cannot ensure mail system can work correct with Active Directory On-Premise version 2016. That is why the features/functions provided by other applications are not included in this statement.

Therefore, we recommended to proceed a test in UAT environment firstly to ensure everything works fine with Active Directory On-Premise version 2016"

• Dear Vanathy,

A server that has been elevated as "Domain Controller" in Windows Server 2016 functional level domain can be used as Identity Provider and fully support the SharePoint 2010.

I would suggest you to dirty your hand on this by configuring the Active Directory role on Windows Server 2016 and then SP2010 on the same machine to test and validate this requirement. You can get all the setup files for 180 days trial.

Please refer this link for setting up AD in Windows Server 2016

And then Configuring the User Profile Synchronization in SharePoint 2010

• Hi,

You mean migrating the existing domain controller to Windows Server 2016 ? If yes If your DC is based on windows 2008 R2 then , Yes you can use the updated AD that is based windows Server 2016 (Domain controller) on your SharePoint 2010. But be informed any exchange configuration on your SP2010 farm will get affected due to this latest Migration. Exhcnage 2010 will not supported by the AD on Windows 2016.

• Dear Murugesa Pandian,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Organization wants to revamp/re-architect its existing Active Directory infrastructure to latest version of Microsoft Active Directory 2016

They will upgrade Existing Active Directory Schema by the way of introducing new Windows 2016 Domain controller in our environment.

So in this case will SharePoint 2010 support AD 2016 ? If yes, can you share with me the configuration changes to be performed on SharePoint farm to make it work with AD 2016.

Thanks Much.
