Office 365: Updates don't get applied automatically RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are testing a company-wide rollout of Office 365 Business Premium. For testing purposes we've installed Office 365 Business Premium on 25 machines in our company. For installation the following XML-File was used:

    Important Parts:

    - Install from local source
    - Update from local source

    2 weeks ago I've downloaded the new Version 16.0.11328.20438 with the following xml:

    <Configuration ID="da192995-4b70-4969-a82f-1fa98c9ba1a3">
      <Add OfficeClientEdition="32" Channel="Broad" SourcePath="\\<dfsroot>\Microsoft\Office\Office_365\de\update" AllowCdnFallback="FALSE" ForceUpgrade="TRUE">
        <Product ID="O365BusinessRetail">
          <Language ID="de-de" />
          <ExcludeApp ID="Groove" />
          <ExcludeApp ID="OneDrive" />
          <ExcludeApp ID="Outlook" />
          <ExcludeApp ID="Publisher" />
          <ExcludeApp ID="Lync" />
        </Product>
        <Product ID="ProofingTools">
          <Language ID="en-us" />
          <Language ID="fr-fr" />
        </Product>
      </Add>
      <Updates Enabled="TRUE" Channel="Broad" UpdatePath="\\<dfsroot>\Software\Microsoft\Office\Office_365\de\update" />
      <RemoveMSI />
    </Configuration>

    This worked fine and I can see the related update files on our network share at the right place. Within the configured download place were 2 new folders created automatically(..\Office\Data). Since the same happened within the download location for installation-files(see first xml-snippet), I assume this should be like that "by design". Today (14 days later and all the machines were used 5 days a week during this time and booted mutiple times) I've checked if the clients would have installed the update automatically as I would expect it. Not a single client was Updated. If I open a office application(for example word)and go to "File --> Account"(my installed version is in german so sry if the translation isn't correct at all) I can see that Updates are activated and should be installed automatically(but obviously this didn't happened..) If I click manually on "Update-Options" and select "Update now" the Update will be installed succesfully (from the local source). Because of that I assume my setup is correct and there is something else I'm missing or doing wrong.  Could anyone please elaborate what I'm doing wrong or is there something additional I habe to configure so this will work ?

    Please note: the dfsroot-path and company-name within the xml-snippets were removed due to privacy. They are the same at every instance and I've checked them multiple times(well obviously they have to be correct, if not even the installation wouldn't work at all).

  • Hi,

    As far as I know this is correct process to update Office, users can get a message when there are new updates for Office.

    I suggest you try to use Group Policy to set the update Deadline to install Office update automatically:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployoffice/configure-update-settings-for-office-365-proplus

    Or you can also try to use SCCM tool to help you get the result.

  • We do not have SCCM atm, so this is not an option and also the users didn't saw any message that new updates are available for the last 2 weeks.

    I've configured the Deadline as mentioned now (value within the GPO is "11/7/2019 13:00") and will report back if this changed anything.

  • Hi,

    Did check if you set any group policy for update option?

  • The only group policy settings configured are:

    - Enable automatic Updates --> enabled
    - Hide option to enable or disable updates --> enabled
    - Update Deadline --> enabled because of your suggestions above

    ----

    There are also some settings in the xml used for installation (see first post of mine) which are related to office updates(enable automatic updates, forceappshutdown and update path to a local dfs-share)

    ----

    What I've discovered today on at least 2 clients is that the office installation has detected that there are some updates available for install. If go to "File --> Account" within word for example on those two clients, it is written that "Updates for this product are available for downloading"(sry again if the translation is incorect), but yet they aren't getting installed automatically (the deadline is set to 11/7/2019 13:00). I also tried to run the office update task scheduler manually, but that also didn't installed the updates. So at least the client has detected the updates, but still didn't installed them.

    I will do another test this week-end and reinstall version 20438 on all clients to see if this will change anything. I will wait a few days and check again if the clients will install office updates automatically after reinstalling the whole Office 365 Suite. I will reply then again to you, so please be patient and wait a few days the next week.

    ----

    Just to note: I also downloaded the update files for new version 20468  which was released a few days ago, but I assume it shouldn't be a problem if there are updates available for multiple versions(and it also didn't worked before with a single version).

  • I've reinstalled Version 20420 on 5 machines and none of them has updated office automatically. So this is still not working. Any further advice would be welcome.
