office 365 update error 0xc0000142 RRS feed

  • Question

  • office 365 update - error 0xc0000142 every single time after the update automatically installs itself

This was supposedly fixed 2 years ago ......

And then I receive calls for a week from customers and have to play the "repair and restart" game .....

When will someone actually do their job and fix this ?

  • When you try to start an Office 2016 app, such as Excel 2016 or Word 2016, it fails and you get error code 0xC0000142.

    STATUS: FIXED

This issue is fixed in Monthly Channel Version 1803 (Build 9126.2116) or greater. To get the latest update immediately, open any Office app and choose File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.

  • Hi PC Care SA,

    Sorry for the trouble.

Could you please share more information of users' Microsoft 365 after installed updates?

Please go to File > Account > Product Information, check the Version Number and Update Channel.

On my environment with Microsoft 365 for enterprise installed, which is Version 2005 (Build 12827.20336) with Current Channel, this issue could not be reproduced.

I would like to suggest users try the following steps when they meet this error.

    • Close all Office applications.
    • Enter "services.msc" in Run dialog to open Services.
    • Find Microsoft Office Click-to-Run Services.
    • Right click this service and choose Stop. If the "Stop" could not be chosen, please click "Restart". Then Click Apply, OK.
    • Open Office apps to check this issue.
    • Remember to start the service, keep it back in Running status at last.

    Regards,

    Emily
