During PSConfig Run, Upgrade Search Admin Database Failed for SharePoint 2013 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

SharePoint October 2019 CU installed successfully in SharePoint 2013 servers, but when I try to run PS Config command, we are getting error “failed to upgrade at Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPDatabaseSequence.Upgrade().”

As per the ULS logs, Issue is related with Search service application database upgrade.

“Upgrade [SearchAdminDatabase Name=Search_Service_Application_DB_481323e51…] failed.” Please let us know if you have any feedback.

Exception: Target string size is too small to represent the XML instance.

    Error in brief:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): Target string size is too small to represent the XML instance at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection, Action`1 wrapCloseInAction) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj, Boolean callerHasConnectionLock, Boolean asyncClose) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.TryRun(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj, Boolean& dataReady) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteNonQueryTds(String methodName, Boolean async, Int32 timeout, Boolean asyncWrite) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.InternalExecuteNonQuery(TaskCompletionSource`1 completion, String methodName, Boolean sendToPipe, Int32 timeout, Boolean& usedCache, Boolean asyncWrite, Boolean inRetry) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() at Microsoft.SharePoint.Utilities.SqlSession.ExecuteNonQuery(SqlCommand command)  ClientConnectionId:0ea9d673-54fb-474e-9b51-aac3a4580973 Error Number:6354,State:10,Class:16

Any possible solution would be appreciated.

    Thank You

  • Hi Hiren004,

Which account are you running your PS config with? Try to run PS config with farm account.

    Check the following article:

    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/spses/2018/08/16/sharepoint-2016-psconfig-execution-fails-post-july-2018-update/

If the issue still exists, review the Upgrade Status page in the SharePoint Central Administration website.

Check the upgrade error log file and the upgrade log file (which contains more detailed information than the upgrade error log file).

    Best Regards,

    Lisa Chen

  • Hello Lisa,

We are using the Farm Account for running the PS config cmd.

Permission is already set as you suggested.

The Error exception in suggested link and mine are different.

The exception i got is, Target string size is too small to represent the XML instance.

And Exception in the link is, The database principal owns a database role and cannot be dropped. The proposed new database owner is already a user or aliased in the database. (EventID:an59t)

do you have thoughts for my exception?

    Thank you.

  • Hi Hiren004,

Make the Farm Account as db-owner for Search_Service_Application_DB_481323e51…, then run SharePoint 2013 product configuration wizard as administrator.

Review the Upgrade Status page in the SharePoint Central Administration website.

Check the upgrade error log file and the upgrade log file (which contains more detailed information than the upgrade error log file).

    Best Regards,

    Lisa Chen
