Excel 2003: Excel found unreadable content in filename.xls. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes."

    Question

  • Need help in getting to core of the issue

    Problem Description:

Spreadsheets open fine in Excel 2007 but not in 2003. While launching in Excel 2003 the following message is displayed: "Excel found unreadable content in filename.xls. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes."

    Analysis:

User working on the excel 2003 saves the file, when it is opened again it shows the message:"Excel found unreadable content in filename.xls. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes."

Clicking on yes give another dailog with the error Message and clicking on ok removes data from few sheets.

Also Size of Excel increase from 300 KB (Original) to 3.5 MB.

Excel is a research file with almost 20 sheets with reference to data from another file.

This is happening with few files shared on common network drive.

Request you to help us to find the solution for opening such files.

  • Hi,

Try this to recover the file:
    1. Open the file in Excel 2003
    2. Go to File: Save
    3. Change the Save As type to Web Page (.html), save and close the file
    4. Open the .html file in Excel
    5. Save the file as a .xls (with a new name so the original isn't lost)
