Error opening word .docx document in Sharepoint RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a word document (.docx) in a sharepoint 2013 library that will not open for some users. They are getting the error 'This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page".  Similar documents in other libraries are opening fine. I am assuming I am missing some type of default setting in this particular library, but not sure where to look.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

To troubleshoot this issue, please let's verify the followings:

    1. Does only this document have this issue or all same type's documents have this issue in the particular library?

    2. You mentioned "that will not open for some users", it means some users could open the document, is it right?

    3. "Similar documents in other libraries are opening fine", did you test that on a same machine?

    4. Please check if problematic users have multiple Offices(for example, Office 2010 and Office 2013, or Office 2010 and Visio 2010 etc.) on their machines.

If this issue only occurs for some users, it should be a client issue.

Please compare the Office's version number of problematic users and normal users.

Please go to IE options->Programs->Manage add-ons, make sure "SharePoint OpenDocuments Class" is enabled.

And try to repair problematic users' Office under Control Panel.

    Thanks,

    Wendy

  • #1 - all documents in that particular library have the issue.

#2 - yes some users can open it while others can't.

#3 - Yes tested on the same machine

#4 - they only have one version of office. And the SharePoint opendocuments class is enabled.

It looks to be an issue with the specific sharepoint library since the user that is having an issue can open .docx documents in other libraries just fine.

I did notice one thing that could be the issue but do not know how to fix it. On the file(s) that are opening successfully, the url has this tag at the end:

    "&action=default&DefaultItemOpen=1"

but the problematic ones do not (ends with the filename.docx).

Could that be the issue and if so, how to fix it?

  • Hi J-Bal,

Please go to the problematic library, click Library settings->Advanced settings, in "Opening Documents in the Browser" section, set it to "Open in the client application". Then test again.

    Thanks,

    Wendy
