Shredding Storage works differently after CU RRS feed

  • Question

  • After installing CU (June) the shredding of files works different.

Before CU only known files types (Word, Excel, ...) were shredded to the "FileWriteChunkSize"-value. Other file types like Video and PDFs were stored completly in one entry.

Now after CU all files are shredded to the "FileWriteChunkSize"-value.

This makes the RBS obsolete, because the Limit of "MinimumBlobStorageSize", which is set to "1048576", will never be reached -> NO FILE WILL BE STORED TO BLOB !

Are these changes deliberately implemented or is this a bug ?

  • Both statements are incorrect.

SharePoint 2013 RTM shreds all file types.

SharePoint 2013 Shredded Storage continues to work with RBS, calculating the total file size when determining RBS.

  • But there was a difference between integrated (64kB chunks) and non-integrated file types (1024kB chunks).

    See http://blogs.msdn.com/b/briangre/archive/2015/02/19/sharepoint-2013-shredded-storage-vs-rbs.aspx

    Was this pre SP1 ?

Then why are files greater than 1MB not stored to the RBS ?

In my case only files whose chunk-size is greater than 1MB will be written to RBS. It seems Shredded Storage does not look at total file size, but the chunk-size stored to the table [DocStreams].
