Could SharePoint Online search crawl the file share content similar to SharePoint 2013? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have few questions about Sharepoint online search.

    1. Is it available to index file share which makes available to show up from the Sharepoint online search result?

1-1. If so, how could it be configured?

    2. What is not possible as the content source on Sharepoint online listed below?

    • SharePoint Sites
    • Web Sites
    • File Share
    • Exchange Public Folders
    • Line of Business Data
    • Custom Repository

Answers

  • Hi,

It’s not supported to crawl file share and set content source (except SharePoint online site) using SharePoint online search component.

Thus, you need to create a Hybrid SharePoint farm.

    Thanks,

  • 1. Yes but to do so you would need to create a Hybrid SharePoint farm with a local instance of SharePoint crawling the file share.

    2. The Cloud SharePoint sites can be indexed online, but for any of the rest or for additional non-O365 farms, you need to use a hybrid farm to crawl the content.

  • Thanks for your reply Alex!

But what if customer doesn't want to use on-prem ever but just use SharePoint Online? Then impossible scenarios for all?

  • Correct, at the moment and based on all the roadmaps I'm aware of then those searches must have an on-prem instance. The users might not ever talk to it but you'd need the servers to do the crawling.
