Cannot start MS Office Outlook 2007. A program error occured...

    Question

  • One of our customers is receiving the error "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. A program error occured. Quit Outlook and Microsoft Windows and then start again. A program error occured. Quit Outlook and Microsoft WIndows and then start again."

    This happens at least once a day, when she opens Outlook in the morning. She is currently running Outlook 2007 and Windows XP SP3.

    So far, I've done the following to troubleshoot:

    • Ran Office diagnostics on Outlook with no problems detected or repaired.
    • Uninstalled/re-installed MS Office suite.
    • Created another Outlook profile

    The error still appears. Any ideas?

Answers

  • Hello

    Check if windows search service is running.

    Start -> Run -> services.msc

    Windows search

    If not, try start it up and have a go at starting Outlook again, i've had the same error where this solved the problem.

    Best regards.

  • Can you repro this issue in Outlook Safe Mode?
    Start-> Run; outlook.exe /safe
    (note the space in the command)

    If it works now, your issue is most likely caused by an add-in.
    Which add-ins do you have installed?

    Disable them all and see if the issue still occurs. If not, you can enable them one-by-one to find the culprit. For details see;

  • OMG are you %$#&*@ kidding me?

    This worked. Well in a round about way. I couldn't just turn on the service because it wasn't installed but I went ahead and downloaded and installed it feeling that this was a very long shot but, what can I say? It worked!

    Microsoft you should be ashamed of your selves!

    This particular user that I fixed this issue for was using Google Desktop search. Yes I know it was discontinued but still it works just fine on his machine and so he did NOT need Microsoft search.

    Apparently Microsoft thought otherwise...

    One for the books I guess...

    Thank you N. Andersen! You pointed me in the right direction.
