Office Web Apps Document Format Conversion Issues in SharePoint Server 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are running SharePoint Server 2010 Beta 2 with Office Web Apps installed. All installation and configuration guides were followed, without any issues. All SharePoint 2010 features that have so far been tested work without any problems (with the exception of the below).

Our organisation is in the process of rolling out Office 2007 and Windows 7 (currently running XP and Office 2003), so all of our Office documents are in 97/2003 format. Hence we have significant investment in this older format. SharePoint 2010 is in POC phase at the moment, but we are planning to implement it for a number of key area’s in the organisation.

We have 2 issues with SharePoint 2010 and more specifically Office Web Apps:

    1. Excel 2003 Documents (.XLS) do not display in the browser

Excel Web App doesn’t kick in for XLS files, only XLSX files. The user is always prompted to download the XLS file, and can never open it in the browser (Word and PowerPoint 2003 files open for viewing fine).

    2. Clicking “Convert and Edit” while viewing an Older Word or PowerPoint file (97/2003 format) always fails.

Within a SharePoint document library, a user will follow the prompt to convert the file if they are in the old 97/2003 format and wish to edit in the browser - however, this auto-convert fails with a generic error and the copy of the document it creates in the library (in the new format) cannot be opened in the browser or downloaded and opened in Office 2007. Essentially it is corrupted, trying to open in SharePoint throws an "unexpected error" with Error Id: cd2a16f9-0ed5-445d-b7d6-e1e0079997e3, 20100331153104.

Creating or editing new documents within Office 2007, saving in the new format outside of SharePoint, then uploading them works fine. It's just the SharePoint conversion process that breaks things.

As pretty much 100% of our organisations Office documents are in the 97/2003 format, you can see how this is going to be a significant problem!

I’d appreciate any help Microsoft can provide, as we are very keen to use this product in a number of ways, however this would effectively be a deal-breaker.

    Thanks,

    Andre

This is by design.  Unfortunately, the .XLS file format is not supported for viewing/editing in the browser in SharePoint Server 2010.

  • OWA is in beta, there are a few issues with it that should be fixed and working fully without a lot of the workaround you just went through.  As far as the conversion part, it's something you'll have to retest when RTM comes out.  You don't have too much longer to wait.

  • I appreciate that these products are in a beta state, however I'm surprised that no-one else has come across these issues before. It seems like something that would have been picked up in internal MS testing and at the very least documented.

Unless my situation is somehow unique....

Anyone experienced the Word / PowerPoint conversion issue?

    Thursday, April 1, 2010 5:31 AM
  • Hello,

I am experiencing the same of similar issue with Office Web App... In my case we are using SP2010 and OWA RTM.

Viewing works like a charm, but conversion fails miserably.

To reproduce, I just load a .doc in OWA and select to edit it.

OWA then informs me that to edit the file it must be converted, so I proceed to allow it to do so.

A couple seconds later, I get a very useful error dialog stating:

    Window Title -> File Conversion
Window Content -> An error occured while opening this document.  To edit this document, open it in Microsoft Word.  Note:  No changes were made to your original file.

Here are the logs that I've been able to scrounge when the conversion fails.

Looks like the file isn't checked out so SharePoint can't save its changes

  • Hello Chris,

Good catch, in fact I should have mentioned this but neglected to.

These errors occur regardless of the checked-out state of the document.  The same error happens no matter what.

    Have a good day.

  • Hi,

I have the same issue (1). I can't view xls files and because of that I also can't convert or edit them in the browser.

There isn't even a button for these options.

Word and Powerpoint are working fine and xlsx files also.

I don't know why there are no options for filetypes in the excel services application menu. I can change this for word and powerpoint.

Because we are creating xls files with reporting services, we can't upload the files in the newer version.

We are using: Windows Server 2008, SharePoint Server 2010, Office Web Apps (64bit_English_1_X16_49868) and SQL Server 2008 R2

    Thanks for any help,

    Sebastian Neurohr

  • Hey Sebastian,

I guess Issue #1 is already answered above. Didn't you see the response from Tod Hilton, saying that .XLS is not supported for viewing/editing in the Browser.

Give a try with .XLSX files.

    Thanks for the answer,

but I work with the newest version and the posts above are a little bit old.

And it should work, because it also works with SkyDrive, the free version of the apps. I can view and edit xls files there.

I don't think the free version can more than the licensed one. The Office Web Apps version was downloaded yesterday, so it should be up-to-date.

  • Hey guys.

Having problems with conversion of word documents in OWA.
Same as mentioned in point #2

    Error:
<nativehr>0x8007009e</nativehr><nativestack></nativestack>... - Converted.docx is not checked out. You have to check out the document....

Seems like the conversion service is trying to create a new converted document (... - Converted.docx) that is not checked out and therefore cannot be edited.

    Any ideas?

  • Seems like the conversion service is trying to create a new converted document (... - Converted.docx) that is not checked out and therefore cannot be edited.

I am seeing the same behavior as our friend Bjorn here; we're running SharePoint 2010 Enterprise SP1 with up-to-date OWA.

I've confirmed the behavior by turning of 'Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited?' in the versioning settings of the document library.  Items could then be converted using the Word Automation service, edit in browser correctly prompted for and completed the conversion.  Documents could not be converted when versioning was enabled on the document library.  Does anyone know of a way to have documents automatically be checked out to the user sending the web request when a conversion is done?

Since I'm an inquiring mind, I turned the setting back on to see what would happen.  When I click on the .doc to view, the doc displays in the browser.  When i click Edit in Browser and convert, the application kindly informs me that there is a converted version of this document already.  However, even if I've checked out the .doc, it complains that the document needs to be checked out because the converted .docx version of the doc is not checked out (converted docs are created in the same library).  Pretty confusing for a SP administrator, let alone an end user.

So my major question to Microsoft is:  are the Word Automation-powered document conversion and library versioning mutually exclusive features?
