  • Is this on an Edge Server? If so, do you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 installed?

  • All roles are installed on one server, both CAS and database. I do not see Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 installed on the server within Programs and Features. Does this need to be installed prior to running the CU upgrade?

  • Ok, so it's a Mailbox Server.

CU12 on Mailbox Servers require Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable prior to running setup, so you'll need to download and run that first.

Any further insight as to what could be causing this error?

Here are some points you must pay attention to before upgrading to Exchange 2016 CU12:

    1. Require Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.1.
    2. Need install Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013.
    3. Need to run the cumulative update setup program with the /PrepareAD parameter.

    .\Setup.exe /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms /PrepareAD
