The following softwares constitutes the SharePoint environment:

Operating System: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (64-bit)
            Hotfix for Microsoft Windows (KB976462)
            Windows Identity Foundation (KB974405)

       Microsoft Filter Pack 2.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services ADOMD.NET
       Microsoft speech recognition language-TELE (en-US)
Microsoft chart controls for ms .net framework 3.5
       Microsoft server speech platform runtime(x64)
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services ADOMD.NET
       SQL 2008 R2 Reporting Services SharePoint 2010 Add-in

Database : MS SQL Server 2008 R2 November CTP (64-bit)  [NOTE: SQL Server is running with Local System Account ]

    STEPS FOLLOWED:

    1. Initially I installed the hotfix, later the installation wizard automatically downloaded and installed the prerequisites successfully.
    2. During configuration, created a new farm with a domain user account.

    ATTEMPTS:

    1. Tried to create the farm with local user account.
    2. Turned off the firewall and anti-virus

Inspite of the said attempts the configuration stops.

Please correct me if I am going wrong by missing something or do I need to start/install some services.

    Thanks

    Mohammed

  • When running the SharePoint Configuration Wizard after installing SharePoint, you may encounter the following error:

Failed to create the configuration database.

An exception of type System.IO.FileNotFoundException ws thrown. Additional exception information. Could not load file or assembly ‘microsoft.identity.model. version=1.0.0.0,culture=neutral, publickeytoken=31bf3856ad364e35′ or one of it’s dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

This is a known issue and a KB article is available here .

Solution: Download and install Windows Identity Foundation from the download page here

  • Hi Mohammed,

You are in trouble by trying to setup this on 2GB system. The recommended minimum is 4GB.

If adding more RAM is constraint, then I would advice you to try SharePoint Foundation 2010(SPF2010) which consumes lesser memory than SharePoint Server 2010(SPS2010).  SPF2010 is free!

Did all the prerequisites installed without any error? I am suspecting that you are missing our some SQL Server 2008 CU update.

  • Hi Kamlesh,

    Thanks for your response.

I will look into your suggestion regarding SPF2010.

As I have specified early that I am using MS SQL Server 2008 R2 November CTP (64-bit), I doubt any CU is available for this. Am I using a non-supported version?

Yes, all the pre-requisites installed successfully and I didn't face any performance lag.

Can you elaborate your points with respect to the error I am receiving? Does the memory depends on that error?

    Thanks, Mohammed

  • Hi Mohammed,

OK, you seem to be doing a Farm-based setup.  I don't see anywhere on Internet that this combination (with SQL 2008 R2) has any issue. Do you have any constraint to use full version of SQL Server 2008 R2?

Give a try by running Windows Updates once and then rerun your SharePoint Config Wizard. See if this gives any different results.

I would also recommend you to read this FAQ post and check if anything is missing:

  • Hi Kamlesh,

    Thanks.

Windows updates are automatically done everyday, so I think its not the cause of the issue.

Since the machine is installed with MDS on SQL Server 2008 R2 November CTP. I tried to use the same SQL Server for SharePoint 2010.

My ultimate aim is to try PPS 2010. You have suggested to use SPF2010.

Is there any other pre-requisite I have to install before installing SPF2010. Will the SPF2010 support PPS service?

    Thanks ,Mohammed

  • No PPS is not available on SPF 2010 (refer - http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/en-us/buy/Pages/Editions-Comparison.aspx)

We need to wait to hear from other experts on your problem.

  • Fine then.

I tried giving a specific port no. (e.g 65432), but SharePoint looks for the default port (which is a random port created for every installation) and giving the same error. Please see the log details in my first post.

Is there any comment over the specified log information?

    Thanks, Mohammed

  • Hi kamlesh,

    Sorry for the delayed response.

The complete path of the log file is C:\Program Files\Common Files\MicrosoftShared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS\PSCDiagnostics_6_11_2010_11_30_22_977_1152752072.log

I have even used full version of SQL Server 2008, but it gave the same error.

Finally, SharePoint 2010 is successfully installed when I tried with standalone mode.

    Thanks, Mohammed

  • Please try to disable your firewall and see if the issue continues to persists.

If the issue was gone, try to open the port tcp.udp1433,1434.

Also you could try to disabled the IPV6 and loopback check on the SharePoint Server.

    Sincerely,
    Lambert Qin

  • Make sure you are not running an instance of SQL Server, if you do, make sure you use "SERVERNAME\INSTANCENAME" on the Server Name in the configuration wizard.

  • I got this problem as well, and in the end it turned out to be because my computer name was longer than 15 characters. At some point in the wizard the string specifying the db instance ".\sqlexpress" was converted into "0123456789abcde\sqlexpress" even though my computer name was "0123456789abcdefg". I added "0123456789abcde" in my hosts file to point to 127.0.0.1.

When the wizard ran successfully I also fully specified the local instance rather than using the period shortcut; I'm unsure whether that made a difference.

  • Thats a great find.  The "." (period shortcut) indicates your Local Server instance.
