Cannot access SP via remote browser RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Everyone,

    MOSS 2007 Enterprise 64-bit (virualized with Hyper-V)
    Windows Server 2008/R2 Std
    IE 7

I'm new to SP. My agency had a pro come onsite and install SP, and I've spent a couple of months creating content. All was working just fine, but I got busy with other tasks and had to shelve the SP work for a few weeks. When I got back to it I noticed a couple problems which had not occurred before. The one I'm concerned with here is not being able to bring up the site from a remote browser. Here's the facts...

    1)  I CAN open the site just fine in IE from the SP server.
    2)  I canNOT open the site with IE from a workstation (I’ve tried a couple).
         a.  It gives the “IE cannot display the web page” error.
    3)  However I CAN open the SP Central Admin utility in IE from a workstation.
         a.  But I canNOT access the site via the site link at the Central Admin utility.

The other problem I had was getting the "Cannot connect to the configuration database" when I tried to launch the site. I solved this when I ran cliconfg and discovered that my enabled protocols had been removed. Once I re-enabled them this problem was resolved. So apparently something has shaken loose some settings in the last few weeks.

    THANKS!

  • Hi Looney2nes,

As I understand, you could access to the SharePoint site a few weeks ago. But now, the SharePoint site cannot be accessed, instead, you can access the Central Administration site.

It seems the firewall problems. I suggest you to disable the firewall and test.

Also, have you configured the AAM for the SharePoint site, if yes, please check the AAM address can be accessible at first.

  • Wayne,

Thank you for your prompt response!

I'll check the AAM settings. However, I do not think the firewall is involved in this issue. When I said "remote", I did not mean that I was trying to access the SP site from another network or subnet. I just meant that I was not on the server - i.e. the SP server and workstations I mentioned are all on the same LAN.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Looney2nes,

Is that SharePoint site running with a hostname?  If some, does the DNS entries to the hostname match up with the SP server?  You can test by doing a ping/nslookup to the hostname listed in the site.  If it is using a hostname does it match up in AAM?  If there is no hostname listed in IIS then you are using the machine name and that should show up in the AAM page.

Also double check IIS settings, depending on which version of IIS it will be in either "IP Address and Domain Restrictions" or "Directory Security".  Make sure you don't have any restrictions specified there.
