Windows Update "select updates to install" screen is blank

Question
-
Hi everyone,
I'm using Windows 7 x64 (final RTM build). A few days ago I've started to have problems with the Windows Update control panel. It doesn't show me the description of the updates I've downloaded. It's very annoying!
I've taken a screenshot so you can see it:

Are there any hotfixes yet?
Kind regards.

Hi. I had the same problem and contacted Microsoft for help.
On a remote session they runned MicrosoftFixit50202 and the problem is for now solved.

My problem is also described in this thread:

Does anyone know how to solve this issue? -
Hi,
Thank you for posting.
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
1. Boot to Safe Mode.
2. Go to the directory “C:\Windows”
3. Rename the folder “SoftwareDistribution” as “SD”.
4. Reboot the computer to Normal Mode and run Windows Update to see how it works.
Hope this helps. Thanks.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.

No luck. The problem persists.
Are there any other workarounds? Do you know where does windowsupdate store its settings in the registry? Perhaps I could delete all of them and hope that they get re-created?
Or is there any tool to restore windowsupdate to its default configuration? Something like "netsh winsock reset" but for windowsupdate?
Kind regards. -

I have exactly the same problem. I'm on Windows Vista 32 (Spanish Version).
I think this issue started to occur after installing the following update:
"Agente de Windows Update 7.4.7600.226
Fecha de instalación: 02/10/2009 10:11 a.m.
Estado de la instalación: Correcto
Tipo de actualización: Importante
El Agente de Windows Update habilita el equipo para hacer búsquedas e instalar actualizaciones desde el servicio correspondiente. El agente se actualiza automáticamente de la manera necesaria para poder comunicarse con el servicio cuando Windows busca nuevas actualizaciones.
Más información:

Ayuda y soporte técnico:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=117301"Once, it got fixed by changing Windows Update Settings from Ask before download to Download updates and then ask which ones install. But now this is happening again.
Strange bug...

I'm getting the same thing, but on Vista Home Premium with SP2 installed. I currently have 14 important and 6 optional things to install and I can't see any of them, just like the original posters picture.
Any updates on this thing would be appreciated. -
I'm logged as administrator and having the same problem :S
So the proposed answer does not solve the problem
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi. I had the same problem and contacted Microsoft for help.
On a remote session they runned MicrosoftFixit50202 and the problem is for now solved.

It didn't work in my case (tried both "normal" and "aggressive" settings and doing manually what the "Fix It" does). In my case restarting explorer.exe process resolves the problem. The issue seems to occur after the computer was running for some time (for example PC was put to sleep instead of being shut down for the night, the user never logs off).
When Windows Update reports new updates (for example the Windows Defender definition update) for the first time after startup (or explorer.exe restart) the update details are displayed correctly. The issue seems to occur the next time.

To make matters "interesting" the issue also occurs on yet antoher two completely different laptops Windows Vista. One of them was a "clean install" and within the very same day the issue started to appear (also with Microsoft Update enabled). The only thing those systems have in common are: Adobe Acrobat 9, QuickTime and MS Office 2003 or 2007 installed.
It is natural that the Windows Update screen looks fine after applying the "FixIt" because it requires a reboot (which naturally restarts explorer.exe). After that everything works fine for some time. And then the issue occurs again.

Emkay1001 is right, the problem solves itself after a reboot (there's no need to apply the fixit tool), but unfortunately the problem reappears if the computer is left turned on for a few days.
I guess Microsoft won't pay much attention to this bug, because it can easily be solved by a simple reboot. And we all know how much Windows LOVES rebooting! ;)
It's a mildly annoying problem, but it seems we'll have to live with it.

Thing that bothers me is in the WindowsUpdate.log:
FATAL: GetProperty "updateSummaryImportantText" failed with hr=80070057
Error generally means "invalid argument" according to Error Code Lookup Tool.
So that would mean that after extended period of usage (or after checking for Windows Updates multiple times) either Windows shell (explorer.exe) or it's module (C:\Windows\system32\wucltux.dll) is doing something nobody really expected it to do.
And that's not really that annoying with the exception that it just might mean that explorer.exe is starting to behave weird (hopefully in regards to Windows Update listing only) after extended period of running.

I had the same issue on the same laptop using Vista and now W7 Enterprise 32 bit.
I let Windows update only notify me of updates and want to decide what will be installed first.
I'm also hibernating my laptop most of the time, rather than rebooting. With a stable OS like W7 this is more comfortable.
A reboot solves the issue. But it would be great if after so many years a MS technical person would really investigate the issue, many of us face. Even if it's not high prio.
Thanks for this thread all! Special thanks for the workaround killing task explorer.exe and starting it again. Thats a good workaround instead of rebooting.

FYI There is a special, MS supported way of quitting explorer.exe (not killing it via Task Manager). It's mentioned here.
Essentially, press and hold CTRL+SHIFT keys and right-click the Power/Sleep button in the Start Menu to bring up a proper option.

Got the same problem on Windows 7 x64 eng SP1 with all latest updates when tried to install optional updates. Resolved by killing and restarting explorer.exe.

Same here. Windows 7 x64 (dutch) with all the latest updates and SP
I am running an administrator account and see 12 important and 3 optional updates. but the list is empty when I click on it. I also tried to run the hotfix, but that just makes windows reboot afterwards and then the issue is gone.
You can 'fix' this without the reboot by killing explorer.exe and restarting it!
Thanks sdf etc.!

Exiting explorer (CTRL+SHIFT+Right Mouse Click on the Shutdown button) and starting it again (via the Task Manager) solved the issue for me (Windows 7 SP1 32-bit).
BTW the issue had been occurring immediately after reboot in my case...

I can kill explorer.exe process, but then how could I restart it? When explorer.exe is killed I cannot do nothing with my windows 7 laptop :-(
Thanks.

If not already running you can start Task Manager with ctrl-alt-del.
Then there is a "New Task..." button on the first tab. Enter "explorer" in the dialog and you have a new explorer process running.
