Excel out of resources

  • Excel is showing the following message when opening some spreadsheets"cannot complete this task with available resources. Choose less data or close other applications".

    I have tried the following:

    • Reinstalling Excel
    • Renaming/replacing Excel11.xlb
    • Installed Office 2010 SP1

    Does anybody have any suggestions?

  • It is most likely the workbooks that need fixing and not Excel.
I have to assume the workbooks are of gigantic size and would work if the file size was reduced.
Also, the Excel11.xlb file is part of xl2003.  xl2010 uses the Excel14.xlb file.

  • Hi, the Excel spreadsheets are not particularly complex and are not that large (100 to 200k).  I have looked for the Excel14.xlb file and it does not exist on the system (or on any of our other Office 2010 installations).  Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Try the following:

    1. In Excel 2010, on the File tab, click Open.
    2. In the File Open dialog box, click Organize and then click Layout.
    3. Uncheck Preview Pane.
    4. Attempt to open your file again.

You can also use the same steps to Uncheck Details Pane as well.
