Why does upgrade always fails ??

    Question

  • Got february updates but every time it fails:

The farm is being upgraded in the timer service process. The task is 90.65% comp
    leted.
    Failed to upgrade SharePoint Products.
    An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.PostSetupConfig
urationTaskException was thrown.  Additional exception information: The upgrade
command is invalid or a failure has been encountered.
    Failed to upgrade SharePoint Products.

Total number of configuration settings run: 5
Total number of successful configuration settings: 4
Total number of unsuccessful configuration settings: 1
Successfully stopped the configuration of SharePoint Products.
Configuration of SharePoint Products failed.  Configuration must be performed be
    fore you use SharePoint Products.

the diagnostic log gives me nothing more than:

"The exclusive inplace upgrader timer job failed"

Can anyone tell me how-to upgrade with success`?

    Hi,

According to your reply, I suggest you try the following steps:

Run the below power shell cmdlet to delete the SPsearch service instance in the farm

    (Get-SPSearchServiceInstance).Delete()

Run the below psconfig command to re-install the service

    - psconfig -cmd services install

The SPsearchservice instance is currently offline

I also recommend that you reboot the server

    Thanks,

    Rock Wang

  • James,

Here is an article on a similar issue that was corrected by turning User Account Control off on the server.  See if it helps at all:

    http://www.wictorwilen.se/Post/SharePoint-2010-June-2010-Cumulative-Update-installation-failed.aspx

Here is another post with some other possible solutions as well:

  • Hi Jason

tried to disable the UAC ...still no luck with the upgrade...

Got 2 language packs installed - but I can't be for real that I have to uninstall them in order to perform a upgrade. nor to detach the content databases... there have to be another way...

  • Have you tried to forcing the upgrade and seeing what happens?  Try this command:

psconfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force

  • Hi Jason

Yup - I've used this one: PSCONFIG.EXE -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures

If I only use the one you provide I get only 4 steps and not 6...and the error (different one though):

    An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPUpdatedConcurrencyExc
eption was thrown.  Additional exception information: An update conflict has occ
urred, and you must re-try this action. The object SPUpgradeSession Name=Upgrade
-20120329-163346-859 was updated by domain\setupaccount, in the PSCONFIG (4952) p
    rocess, on machine <machinename>

    If I re-run it :

    An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.PostSetupConfig
urationTaskException was thrown.  Additional exception information: The upgrade
command is invalid or a failure has been encountered.
    Failed to upgrade SharePoint Products.

Total number of configuration settings run: 3
Total number of successful configuration settings: 2
Total number of unsuccessful configuration settings: 1
Successfully stopped the configuration of SharePoint Products.
Configuration of SharePoint Products failed.  Configuration must be performed before....

    I'm running this;

    Major  Minor  Build  Revision
    -----  -----  -----  --------
    14     0      6117   5002

Under CA - System settings - Manage server in this farm -  the status here is  "upgrade available"

  • Can you post the update log from when you ran psconfig with the applicationcontent and installfeatures flags?

  • James, it looks to be your search database that failing to upgrade (WSS_Search_TEST).

The first thing I would look at is to make sure the search service application is using the correct account with the correct password and that account hasn't been locked out. You can find the account it's using by going to Central Administration > Manage Service Applications.  Then highlight the search service application and select properties from the ribbon.  The account it's using should be listed under Search Service Account.  Then just check passwords and make sure it's not locked out in AD.

Next I would restart the service.  You should be able to go into windows services and restart the SharePoint Server Search 14 service.

Finally, run your PSCONFIG.EXE -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures command again and see what happens.

  • We can try to clear the configuration cache and run the upgrade again and see what happens.

    1. Stop the SharePoint 2010 Timer Service
    2. Go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\SharePoint\Config\. There should be a couple of folders with GUIDs for names there.  One should contain a file called cache.ini and a bunch of xml files.
    3. Make a backup of the cache.ini file.
    4. Delete all of the XML files in the folder.Leave the GUID folder and cache.ini file in place!
    5. Edit the cache.ini file and delete all of it's contents and replace with the number 1.  Save and close.
    6. Start the SharePoint 2010 Timer service.
    7. If you open the cache.ini file, it should have updated and no longer say 1.
    8. Run PSCONFIG.EXE -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures

    Hi,

According to your reply, I suggest you try the following steps:

Run the below power shell cmdlet to delete the SPsearch service instance in the farm

    (Get-SPSearchServiceInstance).Delete()

Run the below psconfig command to re-install the service

    - psconfig -cmd services install

The SPsearchservice instance is currently offline

I also recommend that you reboot the server

    Thanks,

    Rock Wang
