File Migration Planning

Question
-
Hi All,
I need to plan an upgrade from W2008 - W2016 of two of our File Servers. Both servers have the File Services Role installed and have numerous volumes and network shares connected.
Has anyone ever undergone a migration of Files Servers where users Profiles & most of the companys data are held?
Any help or information would be greatly received.
Regards.

1. You could use in-place upgrade
2. If your servers are virtual you could configure new VM with the same FQDN and IP, then move virtual disk with data to this VM from old one.

Hi,
You could have a look at the Storage Migration Service, it's a tool intended for server/cluster migrations.

Hi czql5v,
If you keep the same server you could do an in-place upgrade
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/upgrade/upgrade-overview
Or you could use the Storage Migration Service to migrate to another server as the above reply
Best Regards,
