Replaced Mother Board in my ThinkPad and the Microsoft Office 2010 required new activation. The Product Key which was part of the product was said to be not valid. It is odd to me that the product key has been valid for three years,.. then not! Is there any way around this issue?

If so, that's not valid for Office, its' only valid for Windows.Don [doesn't work for MSFT, and they're probably glad about that ;]

I used the same Product Key when the software was first installed three years ago... I have to assume Microsoft has cutoff all support for their old software and forcing people to purchase the 365 version which I hate. Anyone know for sure?

I don't know for sure. I have seen where older products like OFF2010 won't activate, either because all of the allowed activation tickets are consumed (eg too many install attempts) or the wrong/mismatched pkey is attempted.
these articles offer some suggestions for checking your pkey

Hi Harvey,
Do you use retail Office 2010? Such as Office Home & Business 2010, Office Home & Student 2010, and Office Professional 2010?
The key will be bound to the computer's hardware, such as Mother Board. This is to limit number of times the key used to activate Office.
For retail versions of Office, 1 key is only bound to 1 device. So you might see an error message for Office activation on the same computer after a hardware change. More detailed information, please refer to the link below.
Activate after reinstalling or moving Office
Like the suggestion mentioned in the link, I would suggest you activate Office by telephone. Please follow the steps in the previous link to get the Installation ID shown in the Activation Wizard, and provide it to Microsoft. In addition, tell Microsoft about the replacement of the Mother Board.
Hope this information could help you.
Regards,
Emily
