The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'rbs_fn_get_blob_reference'

Question

Hello,

I just set up RBS on SharePoint 2013 following this guide which seems that went wrong. Now, all my attachments on the farm are broken after running $rbs.Migrate() from this guide.

This is what I see in the logs. I'm hoping that this is some sort of permission issue.

OK, to resolve this I gave dbo and db_rbs* roles for the application pool account on the content db. Phew!

I have been receiving the same error and this is the only info on the issue so here is my 2 cents. I hope this helps someone else if you get this issue.

Problem: Enabling and disabling RBS gave me this issue on the server running the SSRS SSA in the ULS:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'rbs_fn_get_blob_reference', database 'SP_Content_Paul', schema 'mssqlrbs'.

at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection, Action`1 wrapCloseInAction)

Disabling the RBS on the Content database allows me to add new Rdl files.

Give db_rbs_admin the role on the content database(s) to the account used to call the function, in my case this was the SharEPoint SSRS SSA app pool account and not the app pool account running the web application.

Here are the steps for granting the permissions:

In SQL Server Management Studio, connect to the SQL Server instance with the content database.
Expand Databases, expand the content database, expand Security, expand Users
Select the user account for the web application pool account. Right click, Properties.
Select the Membership page
Select db_rbs_admin and db_owner roles. Click OK
Under the database, expand Security, Schemas, and double click mssqlrbs
Select the Permissions page. Search for the application pool account and grant the Execute permission. Click OK
Refresh the SharePoint page in your browser

Jason, is there an actual technet document describing the necessary permissions or are those two roles db_rbs_admin and db_owner just made it work? I curious since I thought the SPDataAccess role superceeds db_owner in 2013.

I took a look at the roles in a 2013 Farm.

db_rbs_admin has View permission to the mssqlrbs schema. SPDataAccess does not.

I'm not sure about db_owner though. It's likely overkill for this purpose. My suggestion would be to grant the db_rbs_admin role and see if that works. To be honest when I wrote my comment it was only to expand on the steps for setting these permissions as it wasn't clear from the accepted answer.

this worked for me. problem was exclusive to accessing sql reports (via SSRS integration).
