DFS Config RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have two DFS File Server(SRVF1&SRVF2) , one is running Windows 2012 R2 and another is windows 2008 R2.
DFS Management( DFS Namespaces) is Install in our Domain Controller WS2012R2.
We want to create new DFS File Server(SRVF3) , what is the good practice to implement this and to have everything on the new DFS File server.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

Thanks for posting in the correct forum :-)

    Basically you have two options:

    Option 1

If you want to keep your existing DFS Namespace you can simply add your new server (SRVF3) to the existing DFS Namespace. If you plan to decommission the older DFS file servers, this would be the better option, because here you can continue using your existing DFS domain-name and shares. You will of course have to add the new file servers to the existing folder targets, depending on how your configuration looks like.

    Option 2

If you insist on creating a brand new DFS Namespace, then simply install the DFS Namespace role on the new file server (SRVF3) and re-create the folder targets as you've had it previously (this is a lot of more work, basically starting from scratch).

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Thank you for your prompt reply.

Yes, we want the older DFS File to decommission.
i think  option 1 is better for us ;) or ??

    Thanks

  • Yes, in this case I would add the new server to your current DFS Namespace.

Depending on where you have your file server data, I'm guessing on your old file servers SRVF1 & SRVF2, then you will have to migrate/move the data to your new file server SRVF3 and then you'll finally have to re-create your folder targets within DFS.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for posting here!

Based on my understanding, you want to remove  file server 1 and server 2 and the DC still act as the DFS-N server ,right?

As Leon said , in this situation , we need to migrate all the files to server 3,remove file server 1 and server 2,add file server 3 as the folder targets.

For the file transfer , an External Storage Media can be considered to avoid more net work traffic.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi,

    @Leon Laude i am back now :)

I have install New Server WS2016 "SRVF3" with DFS Replication, File Sever Resource Manager Roles, have joined to domain.

this is DFS Management in our Domain Controller WS2012R2

    DFS Management
     I
     Namespaces
       I
      contoso.com\Project
        I
[Folder] Aktuell Prjoect                Folder Targets Path \\SRVF1\Project\AA; \\SRVF2\Project\AA or

    add Folder Target \\SRVF3\Project\AA

    add Folder Target \\SRVF3\Cont\C

what are the steps for the new SRVF3 replication ??

  • If you need to replicate the data from the server SRVF1 to SRVF3, open the DFS Management tool and head to the Replication tab, there create new replication groups.

You can follow up on the following guide:
    https://theitbros.com/configure-dfs-replication-windows-server-2016

Simply create replication groups, set the source server as SRVF1, and the destination server as SRVF3. Then select the folders that you want to replicate from SRVF1 to SRVF3.

Once all data has been replicated (this can take a while depending on how much data you have), you can create new folder targets within your existing DFS Namespace, then add the replicated folders that exist on the new SRVF3.

    Example: \\SRVF3\Cont\A

  • Hi Leon,

yes, we need to copy data from  srvf1 to srvf3, then to delete the server srvf1
can we use replication groups what exists now or we must create new replication groups??

    hanks for your reply!

  • You can use existing replication groups or create new ones.

  • Hi,

    @Leon Laude i am back!
i hope you can help me for the final step.

the server "srvf3" work fine, but now i need to delete the server "srvf1"

    what is the best practice:

    1. to login to srvf1 and from there to delete from DFS Management=>Replikation SRVF1

    2. DFS Management => Namespace => \\arbanet.net\Projekte = > \\SRVF1\Project\AA (Folder Targets) and Delete.

We thank you in advance for your suggestions.

  • Hi,

The best practice is to delete the server from the DFS Management console yes, so if your server is member of a DFS Namespace, delete it from the DFS Namespace.

If the server is a member of a DFS Replication group, delete it from the DFS replication group.

Nothing more is needed to clean things up.
