Visio 2016 error with Autocad dwg inserted RRS feed

  • Question

  • Visio 2016 will insert CAD dwg v2000 and v2007 into page. Save the document as VSDX file. close Visio 2016. reopen the VSDX file with the inserted CAD file, I receive this error

'cannot open the file. The file may not be a DWG or DXF file, It may not be in a supported version of the DWG file format, or it may be corrupted. check the file and try again'

we created a new CAD drawing with just a line and saved to v2000 and v2007 dwg and dxf. same error.

we are using AutoCAD Architectural 2017

  • using Visio 2016 professional and importing Autocad drawings and DXF files saved in 2007, 2003 and 2000 versions. the dwgs imported but after closing the visio file and opening them up, would receive the error that it could not open the DWG or DXF file.

was able to save the DWG file as an R14 version and the DXF as an R12 version. imported the file into Visio. saved the visio file and closed it. opened the visio file and the imported DWG/DXF files were there.

ANSWER: save as R14 or R12 fixed the problem.

thanks for the help and response

  • Hi,

What detailed version of Visio 2016 are you using? Please update it to the latest version to have a check.

Does the issue only occur with this specific Visio drawing file? Please try to create a blank drawing and insert DWG file into it. Will the issue still occur?

As far as I know, with Visio Standard or Professional, you can import a .dwg or .dxf file created from AutoCAD versions 2007 or prior. If you can’t open a. dwg or .dxf file, its file format may not be supported. As a workaround, in AutoCAD open the file, and then save it to a file format that your Visio product or plan supports. For more information, see How to save an AutoCAD drawing to a previous or older file format and DWG version history.

You can also try to save the drawing as .vsd or .dwg and open it to check for issue.

If you have any updates, feel free to post back to let us know.

    Best Regards,

    Herb
