tif files opening in internet explorer RRS feed

  • Question

  • for some reason in sharepoint 2016 tif,tiff files keep opening in internet explorer 11, windows 10.  I have configured the default file association in window 10 on my machine to use windows photo viewer, but sharepoint doesn't respect this.  I have turned on the "open in client applications" site collection feature. Also my docicon.xml file entries look like this for tiff:

     <Mapping Key="tif" Value="ictif.gif"/>
     <Mapping Key="tiff" Value="ictiff.gif"/>

    i'm stuck anyone have some more ideas to try

    The reason I don't want it to open in the browser is that the browser does not have paging controls and only shows the first page.

    In sharepoint 2010 it works fine and does not open in browser!!

  • Hi kdube,

    Per my test in my SharePoint 2016, I encountered the same issue with you. The .tif file always is opened in internet explorer 11 in windows 10 even I set "open in client applications" and configure the default file association.

    But it can work in SharePoint 2010 and windows 7 with IE11, SharePoint 2013 and windows server 2008 R2 with IE 11, and SharePoint 2013 and windows server 2012 with IE 10.

    There are workarounds.

    1. Open the document library with “Open with explorer” and open the .tif file in the windows explorer. Then the .tif file will be opened in the windows photo viewer.

    2. Download the .tif file to the local computer and open the file in the windows photo viewer.

  • thanks for asking I guess its a workaround but not a solution to the problem.  I don't like marking "answers" to problems that are not a solution to the problem.  Thanks for the workaround.
