Windows Not Genuine after cloning HDD to SSD

    Question

  • After cloning an HP OEM installation (that originally had the HP OEM activation) from the original HDD to a new SSD, Windows started popping up with the Windows not genuine message.

    Windows DOES claim that it's activated.

    What I've done is:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows/help/genuine/product-key#T1=tab01

    and changed the product key to use the key from the COA sticker on the system. This didn't work.

    As an Run As Administrator CMD prompt,

    slmgr.vbs -upk

    reboot

    slmgr.vbs -ipk {<var>ProductKey from COA sticker</var>} 

    Still no joy, still comes up showing activated and not genuine.

    I actually have this issue, exactly the same procedure cloning on 12 identical machines with the same factory image, but the problem is occurring only on 4 machines.

    What next?

  • You should run a diagnostic so we can look at your install and determine the cause for this.  I already have an idea why it is occurring but need to see the results first.  Read the directions below:

      

    MGA Diagnostic Report:

    To properly analyze and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the diagnostic report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop -http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

    Once downloaded, run the tool.
    Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button.
    Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your post.

    One Issue Per Thread:

    Most Activation and Validation issues look the same, on the surface, but can have many different causes and fixes. This is why we ask for a diagnostic report and this is also why we ask that you create your own thread for your issue (in other words, don't post your issue in another person's thread). 

    It just becomes too complicated to try to troubleshoot multiple different issues in the same thread.

  • Did those 4 machines happen to have totally different hardware? I may be mistaken but I thought OEM licenses were tied to hardware.

  • All the machines, working and not working, are exactly the same model purchased at the same time. All have the exact same patches, drivers, etc. as they are centrally managed from the server.

  • This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers - Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194  (you want the iata_enu.exe download).   Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

  • I installed the updated Intel driver, had to call for the manual phone activation after that, and re-ran the report. As the report no longer shows file mismatches, this appears to have resolved it.

    I have to say, this activation technology does nothing to slow down piracy and only serves to harm legitimate business when this kind of thing happens. Thank you Kamin and everyone that assisted.
