Suppressing LDAP error 81 messages RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a DMS at work which uses the LDAP system internally to look up job numbers and contacts. This is not an externally facing server and is sensitive therefore to use from outside the office you have to VPN to the office.

This is something we are not looking to change.

However, with the advent of office 2010/2013 whilst composing mail you can insert address that has been cached from lookups whilst you were at work, but will then try to check/resolve with the LDAP address book periodically (about every 5 minutes).

At work this is fine, but when you are out of the office, like on a train (as I am now) you will get hammered with Error 81 pop-ups (I thought pop-ups were universally banned?!) if you're not both online AND VPNed to the office.

The long and short of it is that:

We can't open the LDAP port externally

We don't care that it can't perform the lookup outside of the office

All mobile users are getting increasingly frustrated as we 'reply to all' to ensure all relevant doc pools/contacts are copied in and you'll be hit with multiple 81 error boxes periodically whilst composing for every address that it being looked up and again when you send the mail.

    Any ideas?
