When I installed SharePoint server in windows 8 , during configuration i found this error in Log
Failed to provision the SharePoint Central Administration Web Application. An exception of type System.Xml.XmlException was thrown. SharePoint 2010 does not support Windows 8. It does support Windows 7 (in a limited way), but it may be better to look at using virtual machines running Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012.

There are several posts out there about getting SharePoint 2010 up and running on Windows 8. You could try following this one and see if it helps. If not, there are others. You will need to do some tweaking to get it running. I would agree with Trevor however, you'd be better off starting up a VM.

SharePoint 2010 does not support Windows 8. It does support Windows 7 (in a limited way), but it may be better to look at using virtual machines running Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012.
