Edge transport used as SMTP server for IMAP?

Question
-
Can a AD subscribed Edge Transport Server be used to authenticate AD users to relay SMTP?
I was considering using one as a secure SMTP relay for our remote IMAP clients.
Is the data that is synced via Edge subscription only for verifying recipients, or does it contain password information that could be used to authenticate users for SMTP?

Hi,
You can use a Receive Connector on Edge for Anonymous Relay. For more information, please refer to the following articles:

Could you clarify please, "You can use a Receive Connector on Edge for Anonymous Relay"
Does this mean I can not authenticate IMAP users for sending email via Edge as SMTP server?

Non you cant. However you can do it on Hub trough the 587 submission port (Client receive connector).
Anonymous on Edge will only be able to send to accepted domains, you can configure external relay but it's a bad idea (you fall into the Open Relay categorie).
