Adding Exchange Distribution list to SharePoint Users

    Question

  • Hi,

I am able to add some of the Exchange distribution Lists into a SharePoint Site as  a user while cannot add some other distribution lists. Can somebody help to figure out why some distribution lists are taken as valid users in Sharepoint while SharePoint doesnt recognize some other distribution lists?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

Yes, distribution lists are only used for e-mail distribution and that is not security-enabled. While you can use security groups to control permissions for your site by directly adding the security group and granting the entire group permissions. You cannot use distribution lists in this way. Therefore, the distribution lists are not applicable for security permission scenarios in the SharePoint farm.

However, there is a way to manage the process of keeping the SharePoint group synchronized with the distribution group. Here is an article for this process (KB 825488):

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;825488

    Hope it can help you.

  • Are you sure they are Exchange distribution lists? Sometimes they are AD groups. SharePoint can use any AD groups.
    That's SharePoint for you...

  • Thanks for the reply!

Even I doubt that. How can we determine whether it is a Distribution List or a AD Security Group(without having to go to Exchange/AD maintainance team)?

Also, Just to confirm, Is it that SharePoint does not accept "Exchange Distribution List" as a user?

  • As far as I know, SharePoint does NOT accept "Exchange Distribution List".

When you see DOMAIN\SOMETHING it is a AD user/group.
    That's SharePoint for you...
