Migrate Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to a New Server
-
Hello,
We need to migrate Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to a new server with a different name. The current server is a Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition 32 bit server using the Windows Internal database. The new server is a Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition 64 bit server, and has SQL 2008 Standard Edition installed.
I found the following article on how to perform this procedure, but it states that the servers have to have the same OS and SQL versions.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512723.aspx
Is there a way to move Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to a new server with different versions of Windows and SQL? Thanks, Doug

Hi,
If you want to migrate a farm to a new configuration or equipment type, see Deploy a new server farm, then migrate content databases
If you are using Windows Internal Database to manage databases, you can migrate to SQL Server by using the Migrate content databases from Windows Internal Database to an instance of SQL Server (Windows SharePoint Services 3.0) procedure
so in your case, you are going to install and configure new WSS 3.0, then move your Content DBs only
hope this help

Hi DJoherl,
I agree with Ahmed. There are three specific paths that you can take to change a farm: move, migrate and upgrade. For your situation, you should choose migrate method. Use this procedures for migrating a farm or components when you are changing to a different platform or operating system. For example, use these procedures if you change from Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008.
