desktop icon placement of redirected users RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a legal requirement to back up user data on 60 Windows Ten 1809 connected to a Standard Server 2006 SP2. The user desktop and documents are redirected and reside on a server share for easy backup via the server, not each user. This has been the case since the server was deployed.

We are accustomed to user desktop icon locations getting reset every time the server is rebooted, which is rare. But, recently users are reporting that after organizing their desktops icon locations, they now reset almost daily. We made no changes other than updates. What changed and why are their desktop icon placements resetting at seemly random times and very frequently? How can we get this to stop when the server is not being rebooted? This new defect is wasting a lot of time for 60 people and needs to stop.

One user indicated this change happened about two weeks ago.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and background for this issue.

    Regards,

    Kurt

  • Hi Kurt,

In Sept., there are two main updates for Windows Server 2008 R2 release, your server should restart after these updates installation, this might be a reason for desktop icon placement reset.

Besides, you could tell your users go to:

Settings/ Personalization/Themes. Under related settings select “Desktop Icon settings” Uncheck “Allow Themes to change desktop icons”

Un-check Auto arrange icons. Check Align icons to grid. Arrange icons to required position. Right click desktop, Left click Refresh.

    Regards

  • Teemo,

Thanks for those details. It turned out that putting this docked laptop on a wired connection ended the desktop connection issues. It seems the WiFi was a bit weak in that office. All better now. The sessions to the server are no longer interrupted.
