Licensing, number of sockets and virtual machines RRS feed

  • Question

  • We installed SQL Server Web Edition on an virtual machine equiped with 8 vcpu.

We do not have the control on virtualization system.

Unfortunately, we can not use all the vcpu because machine came with 8 socket! 1 socket = 1vcpu...

By the licensing system, we are limited to 4 sockets, so 4 vcpu.

This limit is not very adapted to virtuals machines because, if we could access to virtualization, we should modify this parameter without impact of numbers of vcore, without impact of the system performance...

Is there a way to disable this limit based on sockets for virtual machines, without migrate to Enterprise Edition?

  • No.

That is a hard coded limit in that edition.

Your VM admin can normally change that setting in the VM, and reboot to resolve the issue.

No, different edition has different limits. Please refer to Licensing: How many cores can you use?

In addition, for detailed information about the license issue, please call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist. For international customers, please use the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft Licensing Sites to find contact information in your locations.
