Windows Server Backup 2016 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have just installed a Windows 2016 Hyper-V server and I wanted to check if this version of Windows Server Backup can protect Hyper-V VMs running Windows 2008 R2 and later.  I also wondered if it could back up a VM running Windows 2008, although this may not be necessary yet.

    Thanks

    Chris

  • yes, this is good question ,you need to do some experiments  if you want to do this backup solution .
Because there are special applications (like SQL ,exchange, lync etc) which will be install on server 2008 .

  • Hi,

All depends on how you do the backup.

You can export all the VM running Windows Server 2008 R2 and 2008, and add it whenever you wish.

Remember! Once you add the "exported VM folder" you need to export VM again to be able to add it again.

  • Hyper V 2016 don't have GUI, you can use other server to connect to the hyper V Server 2016 to manage the Windows Server Backup with GUI remotely.you can refer below website.

  • Thanks for your reply Andy,

It doesn't matter too much about the GUI as was going to script the backup.  I was more interested in whether this (relatively) new incarnation of Windows can backup older versions of Windows as Hyper-V guests when running a Hyper-V backup (i.e. as far back as Windows 2008)?

    Regards

    Chris

  • Thanks Andy,

Some useful info here - just seen I'm afraid.  No longer an issue for me though now as using DPM 2016.

Apologies for the delay in responding, but thanks anyway,

    Chris
