Monitoring status changes to list fields in PWA RRS feed

    I've got a SharePoint list in PWA to monitor Risk, Issues, Benefits etc and I want to track various facets of each through time.

    To avoid needing to add a custom column for each financial period as time passes (and associated need for users to add those custom fields to their views) I'd like to simply call these columns P1, P2, P3 and so on. Problem with that is then it becomes difficult to associate them with the appropriate date to visualize over time.

    I've read that you can add some customization to record the date that a number field is edited in SharePoint, which would be ideal. I want to timestamp each entry into the column so that I can use these to plot the values through time using Power BI. Has anyone done this, and if so what approach did you use?
