how to set the alternate download server in gpo

    Pergunta

  • There is an option to set the alternate download server in windows update gpo for specifying intranet Microsoft update service location. I would like to set up a workstation named test_update as the alternate download server. What is the correct way to fill in the alternate download server in this gpo? Shall I put "http://test_update"? Do i need to specify any port number?

Also if I specify the alternate download server, does it mean that all the WSUS clients will download the updates from this alternate download server?

Please advise! Thank you very much!

  • You have to configure WSUS on another as per my knowledge or you have to save WSUS updates another server location.

you can control WSUS update download destination by using firewall level.

  • Hi L14507,

The alternate download server configures the Windows Update Agent to download files from an alternative download server instead of the intranet update service. The option to download files with missing Urls allows content to be downloaded from the Alternate Download Server when there are no download Urls for files in the update metadata. This option should only be used when the intranet update service does not provide download Urls in the update metadata for files which are present on the alternate download server.

    Note

If the "Configure Automatic Updates" policy is disabled, then this policy has no effect.
If the "Alternate Download Server" is not set, it will use the intranet update service by default to download updates.
The option to "Download files with no Url..." is only used if the "Alternate Download Server" is set.

Please refer to the following link:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/update/waas-wu-settings

We shall put "http://test_update:8530" in gpo setting.

If we specify the alternate download server, WSUS clients will download the updates from this alternate download server.

Hope this helps and feel free to contact me if there is any question.

    Best regards,
    Li Jianjie

  • Thank you very much for your response. The reason that I am thinking of setup of alternate download server is because we have our WSUS server to be set to have the updates storage in Microsoft website instead of the local server and therefore all the workstations will go to download updates from internet after I approve the updates, which use a lot of network bandwidth. So does setup of alternate download server will help to fix the situation? Also test_update machine has no wsus to be installed. Will it work to set "http://test_update:8530" in gpo setting? Test_update is just another WSUS client workstation.

Besides, I noticed that windows 10 has delivery optimization feature, which allow downloads from other PCs to speed up the process. How can I take advantage of this feature in gpo? Can you advise?

    Again, thank you!!!

  • Hi L14507,

Thanks for your feedback. For your concern, setup of alternate download server will not properly help to fix the situation.

As you have mentioned, we could use delivery optimization feature of windows 10 in GPO to allow downloads from other PCs. Please refer to the following link about how to take advantage of this feature in GPO.
