Can't Set COM port

  • Hi,

I'm trying to setup the COM port on the XP VM.

I've set the device I need to use to COM1 but in the VM's settings when I try to assign COM1 to the VM's COM1, in the drop-down list of COM ports I only see ports 5-8.

Ports 1-4, which are the only ports the VM will recognize, don't show up.

Any idea how this can be resolved?

  • Launch the Windows XP Mode.

Right click on Virtual XP icon on the Task Bar. Then select “Manage
    Virtual Machines.”

Right click on the virtual machine and selected “Settings.”

On the left side of the screen you will see the settings for the virtual XP mode. Click on COM1 to display
the current mapped com settings for the desired comport.

By default the comport will be
set to none. Click on “Physical Serial port” and choose the com port that will be used for the shared
connection. Click on ok to accept the changes.

How did you create the Windows XP VM, Hyper-V or third party software?

Could you see the COM1 port on the host PC?

Please also check if the COM1 is in used on the host PC.

And if your current Windows is Windows 7, you could also try to use Windows XP mode in Windows 7. Windows XP mode makes it easy to install and run programs that run on Windows XP directly from a computer that runs Windows 7.

Here is a link for your reference.
